Anthony Kiedis is “on the mend,” and will be “back better than ever” after falling ill, says Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.

As reported, the band were forced to pull out of a gig on Saturday (May 14) when their lead singer was hospitalised. It was later confirmed that he had contracted intestinal flu.

Smith told Radio X that the band’s frontman will be back onstage in Ohio this weekend and explained what happened with Kiedis going to hospital.

“His stomach was killing him (and) It was really scary,” the drummer said. “So we went directly to the hospital and we were really upset we couldn’t play for the fans, but also more worried about him. I really appreciate all the well wishes. People sent so much stuff.”

Smith was all too aware of 2016 being a terrible year for losing musicians: “I know everyone’s freaked out when they hear about another musician going into the hospital. It’s been such a rough year. He’s a very strong man and he”ll be back better than ever.”

Earlier this month the Chili Peppers announced details of their new album ‘The Getaway’ and shared its first single ‘Dark Necessities’.

‘The Getaway’, their first record since 2011’s ‘I’m With You’, will be released on June 17. It was produced by Danger Mouse and mixed by Radiohead‘s Nigel Godrich.
