On Thursday’s Tonight Show Jimmy Fallon, Weezer, and the Roots blessed us with a “classroom instruments” version of A-ha’s “Take on Me” and we don’t know whether to appreciate how well it turned out or laugh at how ridiculously everyone looks. The group took the retro route with New Wave/synth-pop haircuts, neon jackets, sharp shoulder pads and rolled-up sleeves.
The 13-member crew performed the A-ha’s 1984 hit single with the help of shakers, wood block, toy xylophone, tambourine, bongos, ukulele, floor ton and a melodica. Weezer’s lead vocalist Cuoma belted out the octave-leaping vocals with the other chiming in on the staccato backing vocals. To add even a more eighties feel the editing crew went with the theme or the original songs’ party animated video with sporadic bursts of black-and-white.
This wasn’t Weezer’s first time doing their own version of “Take on Me.” The band recorded a version of the single as part of their recently released, self-titles covers LP “The Teal Album.” The band released their 13th album of original material, the Dave Sitek-produced Weezer “The Black Album” on Friday.
