Fender have announced that their new signature bass design has been created in collaboration with Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea.
Although there’s plenty of basses to choose from, the company has recreated Flea’s cherished Shell Pink ’61 Jazz Bass that he received from a fan. He used this particular bass to record Red Hot Chili Peppers ‘Stadium Arcadium’ and ‘The Getaway’, as well as with Thom Yorke supergroup, Atoms For Peace.
Speaking in a statement, Flea said: “It’s truly the greatest bass I’ve ever played,” before adding that Fender “embodies everything” he loves about music and individuality.
“It reflects the soul of rock, punk, R&B and funk. It’s this bass that pushes me to give more each time I play. The Flea Jazz Bass is a true resurrection and possesses that wave of energy a bass should give you when it’s in your hands.”
Speaking of their reasoning for collaborating with the Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist, Fender’s Justin Norvell said that ?Flea is a “hugely influential and innovative musician,” describing him as “an icon of the modern bass.”
The bass is priced at $1,199.99 – around £922 – and comes with a special 4-bolt neck plate with engraved artwork by Flea.
